AbstractA new type of gold nanoparticle—called “spiky nanodumbbells”—is introduced. These particles combine the anisotropy of nanorods with sharp nanoscale features of nanostars, which are important for SERS applications. Both the morphology and the optical response of the particles are characterized in detail, and the experimental results are compared with FDTD simulations, showing good agreement.
