Seasonal cycles in Radium fluxes to a Mediterranean Bay: submarine groundwater discharge vs porewater advection

AbstractSubmarine groundwater discharge (SGD) includes both fresh groundwater discharge and recirculated seawater through the coastal aquifer, but excludes small-scale (<1 m) recirculation processes, commonly referred as porewater advection. Radium isotopes are usually applied as tracers to quantify SGD, mainly because they are conservative in seawater and SGD is generally their major source to coastal waters. However, short-scale porewater advection can also result in significant fluxes of Ra isotopes, particularly the short-lived ones. We evaluated the seasonal variations on the flux of Ra isotopes to a shallow semi-enclosed bay (Alfacs Bay, NW Mediterranean). Results showed large seasonality in fluxes of 223,224,228Ra to the bay, with Ra inputs up to 10 times higher in summer than in winter, whereas 226Ra fluxes were fairly constant throughout the year. These findings, together with the constant and relatively low Ra activities in SGD springs, suggest that summer fluxes of Ra isotopes are mainly derived from porewater advection likely forced by bioirrigation, whereas in winter, when biological activity is reduced and the hydraulic gradient increases, SGD becomes the major source of Ra isotopes into the bay
