ResumenWithin the EU project Citclops (Citizens’ observatory for Coast and Ocean Optical Monitoring) novel techniques for the acquisition of water constituents by means of smart phones are being developed. Results of water colour, transparency, and fluorescence measurements can then be translated to environmental processes that are understandable by the general public. Data are standardised following international protocols and shared via the project webpage (www.citclops.eu). Citizen data are supported by MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) satellite images. We present results of combined satellite- and in situ measurements of water colour, with focus on phytoplankton dynamics, in our core site Ebro Delta, NW Mediterranean. While space-borne observations give a good general understanding of seasonal dynamics, point measurements revealed rapid changes of phytoplankton accumulations over space and time. Measurements thereby not only increase our understanding of the system, but could also be integrated to phytoplankton surveillance efforts. These direct links to environmental processes of societal concern are an incentive to get engaged in environmental stewardship, and at the same time increase ocean literacy of the general public
