Microfluidic droplet zooplankton feeding experimental protocol

ResumenFresh and marine water are the biota of micro-level organisms (≤ 1mm) that feed on algae and other suspended particles. Zooplankton such as copepods and daphnia act in turn as food sources for fish and other marine life and are important for the aquatic food web; additionally, they produce nearly 80% of the Earth’s oxygen via planet carbon and biochemical cycles. During oil spills, microdroplets are among the resulting suspended particles. These micro-oil droplets are generated in aquatic environments by a variety of processes including water turbulence, temperature and pressure changes, and chemical dispersion. Their presence affects the behavior of zooplankton, primarily in their swimming and feeding mechanics. Resulting, it is important for us to study these effects and understand the magnitude these conditions have on correlating biological systems. This manual was created to ensure cross-platform experimentation between collaborating laboratories and outlines basic developed protocols to study zooplankton-animal feeding interactions using novel microfluidic technology. Some biological and microfluidic procedures are abbreviated as prior experience in each is expected. It is suggested to read the manual in its entirety before beginning. Comments, suggestions, and new or condensed procedures are welcome for discussion
