AbstractThe semiconducting oxide Bi4Sr8Cu5O19+y (1) presents a tubular structure related to that of the 2201 phase. We have performed a study of the substitution of La for Sr in (1) and have obtained commensurate doped phases related to the incommensurate structures of the superconductors Bi2Sr2−xLaxCuO6+y. We have synthesized several members of the series Bi4Sr8−xLaxCu5O19+y and established the limits of the solid solution (0.0 ≤ × ≤ 1.0). A neutron powder diffraction study of the member with x=1.0 is also reported.
