dc.description.abstract | In recent years, there is much interest in dietary approaches that modulate the gut microbiota composition towards improving health. Prebiotics are mainly oligosaccharides that are not digested by the human host and reach the large intestine where they are selectively fermented by beneficial bacteria (lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) and not by those that apparently can be harmful (Bacteroides and Clostridium species) (1). Several studies have revealed the presence of different glycosyl inositols in legumes (2). However, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies investigating the prebiotic activity of these compounds. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of glycosyl inositols on the composition and activity of the human intestinal microbiota. Galactinol commercial standard and ciceritol isolated by semipreparative HPLC from an inositol-enriched chickpea extract (2) were submitted to in vitro fermentation using batch culture systems at 37 ºC under strict anoxic conditions with human fecal suspensions for 6 and 24 h. Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) were used as positive controls. Quantitative changes in the bacterial community were evaluated by qRT-PCR. The bifidobacteria population experienced a significant increase during incubation when galactinol or ciceritol were used as carbon source and similar to that found for GOS. In addition, an increase of acetic, propionic and butyric acid concentrations, measured by GC, was observed during fermentation of the glycosyl inositols. This is the first time that bifidogenic properties are attributed to glycosyl inositols, suggesting their possible application as prebiotics. | es_ES |
