ResumenThe Ebro Valley in Aragón (Spain) has practiced irrigation for approximately 2000 years, having one of the longest histories of continuous irrigation within Europe. Moreover, the only Aridisols in Europe occur in Spain, and Aragón contains a major portion of these soils. Remediation of soil problems associated with irrigation is needed to sustain agriculture and protect the environment. The region offers a great opportunity for scientists and engineers to gain knowledge and to conduct field experiments to solve aridity-related problems around the world. This article reviews the agricultural and environmental problems associated with irrigation in Aragón and possible solutions.
