The geomorphological and palaeohydrological response of fluvial systems to climatic, human and tectonic controls

Abstract

International meetings can be considered appropriate forums in which to assess the scientific health of the different disciplines comprising the geomorphological community. At the Sixth International Conference on Geomorphology held in Zaragoza (7–11 September 2005) the session on Fluvial Geomorphology and Palaeohydrology was the largest, with a total of 95 abstracts accepted (44 oral presentations and 51 posters). A greater number still, of fluvial papers, were presented at the event since there were a number of related parallel sessions organised, namely: Large Rivers (12 presentations); Interaction between fluvial, aeolian and lacustrine processes (5); and Hydrology and Geomorphology of bedrock rivers (14). In summary, of the 875 abstracts accepted for the Zaragoza Conference at least 126 abstracts (15%) were directly related to river studies.
