dc.description.abstract | Small pelagic fishes play a major role in marine ecosystems transferring energy from the lower to higher trophic levels due to their significant biomass at intermediate levels in the food web. Because dynamics and reproductive success of small pelagic fish populations are highly subject to environmental variability, it is essential to understand how changes caused by global warming could affect these populations to evaluate their viability in a changing environment, as Mediterranean Sea. Thus, bioenergetic models are useful to predict the response of small pelagic fish populations to different scenarios driven by global warming. However, bioenergetic parameters are frequently borrowed from close species, compromising models accuracy. In this context, the condition and energy density of anchovy and sardine off the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea were analysed to investigate seasonal changes and compare the different strategies deployed by both species in the use of trophic resources intended for the trade-off between reproduction and growth. The trends on somatic and gonadal condition and the lipid content seasonality demonstrated that anchovy relied on income energy to reproduce (income breeder), whereas sardine depended mainly on its reserves (capital breeder). Whilst anchovy suffered a decline in energy content after its spawning period, the lowest energy density in sardine was observed during its spawning period. Seasonal changes of the energy allocated to gonads were more pronounced in anchovy than in sardine.
