ResumenRiver watersheds are terrestrial systems that integrate a number of environmental features and anthropogenic pressures, and whose changes have a direct influence on adjacent coastal seas. Our study analyses (1) the input of nutrients to river basins, and (2) the riverine export to coastal waters, for over 30 rivers in the Iberian Peninsula. Special emphasis is placed on nitrogen (N), although the export of phosphorus (P) and silicate (Si) is also assessed. We provide an overview of the temporal evolution (20-year time series) and the intraannual variability of nutrient fluxes for specific rivers and integrated coastal regions (the Mediterranean façade, the Atlantic front, and the Cantabrian front), and discuss the effects of sustained nutrient overload on land, freshwater, and marine coastal systems. For the latter, the eutrophication risk associated with river inputs is addressed by means of an indicator (Index of Coastal Eutrophication Potential, ICEP, Billen and Garnier, Mar Chem 106:148–160, 2007). Past and future trends in the context of increasing temperatures, increasing human pressures and regulation policies are discussed
