East Indies, West Indies: Garcia de Orta and the Spanish Treatises on Exotic "Materia Medica"

AutorPardo-Tomás, José
Fecha de publicación2015
CitaciónMedicine, trade and empire. Garcia de Orta's "Colloquies on the simples and drugs of India" (1563) in context: 195- 212 (2015)
ResumenThe Hispanic imperial agenda on the communication of knowledge of "materia medica" deriving from the overseas territories was modified by the arrival of the work of Garcia de Orta and, after 15 years of a policy of encouraging the circulation of that material, the unification of the Crowns brought with it a further change in that imperial agenda by blocking the continuity of that circulation, at least as far as printed works are concerned. The aim of this chapter is to analyse the works produced in the Iberian Península during that 15-year period (1565-1580) in order to demonstrate not only the importance and influence of the work of Garcia de Orta, but also the direct or indirect link between the Crown and publishing ventures during those years and the consequent silence that was imposed from 1580 on.
