Molecular magnetic systems for biomedical applications

ResumenIn the last twenty years there has been strong interest to investigate the possibilities and applications of molecular magnetic systems in biomedicine. Free radicals, magnetic colloids and nanoparticles but also molecular magnetic clusters, single molecule magnets and nanosize metal organic frameworks have been studied for this purpose due to their magnetic functionality. Moreover, combined organic-inorganic molecular nanotechnology enables addressing challenges otherwise difficult to reach, like the simultaneous diagnostic and therapies using the same material. I will review here the different biomedical applications derived from the magnetic functionality providing some selected examples based molecular magnetic systems. Moreover, I will present a polymer-based multifunctional synthetic platform we have developed that may be used as a matrix for the encapsulation of inorganic nanoparticles (magnetic, luminescent, radioactive, …). The matrix surface enables further multifunctionalization in a simple and clean way. Examples of functionalities incorporated to this platform are: magnetic nanoparticles, radioactive substituents, optical dyes (fluorescein and rhodamine), therapeutical drugs, antibodies, and an optical thermometer made of lanthanide complexes. In particular, the system shows excellent performance in magnetic resonance imaging and hyperthermia. The last part of the talk will be centred on the biocompatibility of the system based in cellular and in vivo assays and in its in vivo biodistribution.
