AbstractDietary assessment of nutritional status can be done for groups and for individuals, whereby different statistical approaches must be considered. This article is dealing with the methodology required for the micronutrient assessment of individuals. To assess the adequacy of an individual's nutrient intake normal distributions of daily intakes and requirements are needed. Examples are given for the assessment of micronutrients which either have an EAR (Estimated Average Requirement) respectively an AI (Adequate Intake) following the >Applications in dietary assessment> of the U.S. Institute of Medicine. Worldwide acceptance of these guidelines is the prerequisite for an international harmonization in data interpretation. In case of skewed intakes and requirements, these methods are not applicable and therefore new methodologies must be developed in future.
