ResumenThe intermitent flooding of Gallocanta lake is particularly striking at the eastern sector due to the dominant NW wind. Shallow water, consecutive flooding and drought, and mixing of saline and fresh water results in a mosaic of wet environments that host endemic species and a high diversity of habitats. Long-term time-series data are required to identify annual and seasonal variations in rainfall and to correlate the variations with water level fluctuations in wetlands. A time-series data has been completed in this study from 1944 to 2012. The persistence of high-diversity saline wet environments is affected by the variability in rainfall and its effect on the water level fluctuations of the lake.
