Covalent functionalization of graphene oxides for catalysis applications

ResumenTwo graphene oxides (GOs) eharacterized by difTerent type of oxygcn funetional groups and distribution wcrc obtained from two graphites with different crystalline structures by means 01' Hummcrs melhod. The GOs were covalently modified by esterilieations reactions with the appropriate hydroxyl-ending imidazolium salts. The characterization ofthe imidazolium-modilied samples performed by TGA or XPS pennits detennining the amounl of imidazolic eompounds in lhe GOs. The funetionalized samples, based on hemilabile esters O-donor functionalized Nheterocyclic earbene (NHC) ligands, were used to immobilize iridium NHC complexes on the GO materials. The effectiveness ofthe global functionalization process and the catalytic activity ofthe supported eomplexes in reducing eyelohexanone lo cyelohexanol (by means oftransfer hydrogenations from 2-propano1/KOH as hydrogen sourec) can be altributed to the type and dislribution ofthe oxygen nlllctional groups present in the parent graphene oxides.
