Single and mixture toxicity of several pharmaceutical compounds on survival of the haparticoid copepod, Tisbe battagliai

ResumenIncreasing consumption and production rates of pharmaceuticals and limited elimination under conventional wastewater treatment has led to their presence and detection in surface, ground and drinking waters. Even though they are found in relatively low concentrations, they may display persistent exposure characteristics, because their high transformation and removal rates are compensated by a continuous input. In order to evaluate the effect of single and mixture of pharmaceuticals on survival of the harpacticoid copepod, Tisbe battagliai, we have exposed <24h-old nauplii for 48h to increasing concentrations of single compounds or mixtures to assess the acute effects of this class of emerging contaminants. The selected pharmaceuticals are Acetaminophen, Carbamazepine, Atenol ol, Diclofenac and Ibuprofen. The results from each single compound experiment were used to derive the EC5, EC10, EC20, etc parameters and mixture experiments were then be conducted using the combinations of 2, 3, 4 and 5 drugs tested at increasing 48h-ECx values to address synergistic and antagonistic effects. Single and mixture acute mortality was observed at concentrations above reported environmental concentrations. However, these results allow the extrapolation of acute toxicity values to real environm ent scenarios for environmental risk assessment, as well as the detection of synergistic and antagonistic effects of these compounds in real environmental matrixes.
