Seasonal evolution of phytoplankton and cholorophyll-a in the northeast continental shelf of the gulf of Cádiz

AbstractWe investigated the phytoplankton dynamics and its relationship with Chlorophyll-a during four oceanographic cruises in June and November 2006 and January and May 2007 in the northeastern shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Peninsula). We sampled 63 stations at different depths with a CTD provided with a Rosette Water Sampling System. Abundance and biomass measurements of nanno and picophytoplankton (Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus) were carried out by flow cytometry for the whole cruise. The maximum values of Prochlorococcus (>70000 cell/ml) were found in spring in the northern region and in the area in front of the mouth of the Bay of Cadiz. For the Synechococcus and for nanopicoplankton we observed the highest distribution in winter in the frontal zone, corresponding to the transect E, between the Guadalquivir river and the Bay of Cadiz, with concentrations higher than 20000 cell/ml and 15000 cell/ml respectively. Chlorophyll-a varied between 0.32 ±0.44 mg m-3 (June 2006) and 2.03 ±1.26 mg m-3 (May 2007), presenting a coast-oceanwards gradient: it presented the same trend for the two seasons but with the maximum values during spring (Chl-a >3.5 mg m-3), associated to the high biomass of Prochlorococcus. During winter Chlorophyll-a presented low values in the entire zone, with the exception of the northern part where it reached the maximum level (Chl-a >2.0 mg m-3).
