Title

The question of attributing impact: Impact pathways and contribution to impact

AuthorsMolas Gallart, Jordi
Issue Date2012
CitationEvaluating the impact of public research organizations (2012)
AbstractOne major hurdle in impact evaluation is to tackle the attribution issue: i.e. the inability to determine the exact role and share of research in producing a given social benefit, as the observed benefit is the result of the involvement of a diverse set of actors over a long period of time during which actors deploy different activities along an “impact pathway”. Some evaluation methods propose to forego the search for attribution and describe the mechanism through which the contribution of research to social impact is made. This session will illustrate the power of such a change of perspective for the evaluation of research.
