First-principles calculation of the orbital magnetoelectric response

AbstractIn this talk I will survey the formalism for calculating the orbital magnetoelectric response of periodic insulators. The various terms that can generally be present will be described, as well as the special case of topological insulators, where only the so-called Chern-Simons contribution survives, and becomes quantized. A first-principles implementation based on computing the magnetization induced by a finite electric field will be used to determine the full magnetoelectric response of Cr2O3, including both the spin and orbital responses, and both the electronic and lattice-mediated parts of the response.
