Alphabaculovirus of Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Insecticidal activity against several lepidopteran pests

Thehigh hostspecificity of baculoviruseshas beenconsideredanimportant factorin the developmentof these viruses as biological control agentsfrom a biosafety perspective.However, host specificity may representa disadvantage when a complex of twoor more lepidopteran pest species has to be controlledsimultaneously, since it requires the use of several virus insecticides. Several studies have reported the hostrange of many baculovirusesusing a qualitative approach (Groner,1986).However, this informationis not enough since quantitative dataare necessary in order to determinethe insecticidalactivityof each baculovirusagainstthe susceptibleinsect species. The aim of this studywas to determinethe relativepotencyof the Mamestrabrassicae multiplenucleopolyhedrovirus(genusAlphabaculovirus) (MbMNPV) againstseveral important lepidopteran pests.Thepercentageof mortality causedby twodifferentocclusion body (OB) concentrations of MbMNPV(5 x 106 and5 x 108 OBs/ml) was determined in second instars of six insectspecies in a preliminaryassay.H. armigera,M.brassicaeandS.exigua were the most susceptible species, yielding more than85% mortality at both concentrations. Intermediate mortalities of approximately 40-60% with the lower concentration and 80-100% with the higher onewereobtainedinC.includensandS.littoralis.Finally,S.frugiperdashowedtheleast susceptibility toMbMNPV(15% and55% mortaliaty,respectively).Theinsecticidalactivity of MbMNPVagainstthese pests is being studiedin terms of pathogenicity(medianlethal concentration (LC50))and virulence (meantime to death(MTD)). We discuss the potential of MbMNPVas a biological insecticidefor the species includedin this study.
