Trabajo presentado en el IV Congreso Iberoamericano de Productos Naturales celebrado en Río Gallegos (Argentina) del 28 al 30 de septiembre de 2014.
The genus Senecio, is widely distributed throughout the world and consists of approximately 1500 species . Argentina and Chile are the countries with the largest number of species (over 300 species reported for each country) and large number of them located in the Patagonia Region. Senecio species can cause a negative impact on the local economy because of their toxicity to livestock. Their chemical constituents include pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), sesquiterpenes, diterpenoids, and other compounds. These natural products have been reported to have several biological activities (biopesticide, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant). The chemical diversity and biological activity of Senecio species from the Magellanic region and the Canary Islands will be discussed in this talk.
