Growth-form and taxonomy in Arenaria sect. Plinthine (Caryophyllaceae)
Nieto Feliner, Gonzalo
A study of lhe growlh-forrns in Arenaria sec!. Plinthine is presented, deseribing and interpreting
two different, systematically relevant, patterns lhat are defined by the position of the innovation
buds. The first, apparently lhe more evolved one, probably constitutes a good synapomorphy for
lhe 7 taxa exhibiting it: innovation buds arise on short, vegetative lateral shoots arising below the
starting point of the season' s growth of lhe fertile axis. In lhe second case innovation buds arise in
leaf-axils along lhe whole length of lhe season's growth of the flowering shoots, extending to well
aboye the first nodes and up to the base of the infloreseence. Recognition of these two growlhforrns
helps to solve the old problem of lhe correet taxonomic placement of lhe population from
Mont Ventoux (S. France), which must be incIuded in A. aggregata not A. erinacea.
