The White-headed Duck is the only stifftail native to the Palearctic. It is a globally threatened species whose range and population size have decreased drastically since 1900, owing to habitat destruction and hunting pressure. The principal threat is now hybridization with the introduced North American Ruddy Duck. This account includes much new information about Habitat, Distribution, Population, Movements, Food, Social pattern and behaviour, Breeding, Moults, and Geographical variation. Sections on Field characters, Voice, Plumage, Bare parts, Measurements, and Weights are updated, with completely new information on differences between pure birds and hybrids with Ruddy Ducks, as well as description of dark phase birds not mentioned in the original account. There is also a new section on Conservation.
