{ING}Carex brevicollis (DC in Lam. & DC) is a sedge naturally distributed over the Central and Southern
mountains of Europe, on limestone, species-rich grasslands. In areas where the species is abundant,
frequent abortions associated to the consumption of of the oxitocic alkaloid brevicolline occur in livestock. In order to bring up solutions, we undertook a research focused on the elucidation of
the intrinsic (from the plant itself) or extrinsic origin (from a potential endophyte) of brevicolline.
Therefore, 1) we made a survey of the endophytic mycobiota, and 2) we evaluated the relationship
between brevicolline production and the presence or absence of endophytes, comparing the alkaloid
content in endophyte-infected and fungicide-treated plants. We obtained 71 fungal isolates
which belonged to 21 different species. The alkaloid brevicolline was detected in both infected and
non-infected plants. However, its concentration was much lower in fumigated, non-infected plants.
