This work characterizes the wind speed and direction in irrigated areas of Aragón. The goal was to estimate the probability of different values of the meteor wind along the day and the year. Average hourly values of wind speed and direction recorded at 10 automatic weather stations among 1998 to 2003 were analyzed, as well as monthly mean values of day and nighttime wind speed at 15 stations (including the 10 automatic ones). According to the hourly wind speed (Uhora), the locations were classified as: a) no windy, Alcañiz, Daroca and Tamarite; b) slightly windy, Monte Julia and Sariñena; c) windy, Bujaraloz, Monflorite, Montañana and Santa Anastasia; and d) highly windy, Gallocanta. The main wind directions in most of the studied locations were NW and nearby (W, WNW) mainly in the case of moderate winds (Uhora between 2 and 5 m s-1) and the Spring and Winter months. The average daytime values of wind speed were higher than those for nighttime periods, mainly in Spring and Fall. Finally, the work presents two examples of the use of the space and time variability of wind speed to analyze and improve the water management of solid-set sprinkler irrigation systems: the estimation of the wind drift and evaporation losses (PEA) during the solid-set sprinkler irrigation; and 2) the time available for sprinkler irrigation (TD), i.e. that for which the irrigation quality (defined by the Christiansen uniformity coefficient, CUC, and the PEA) are within acceptable limits. According to the estimated hourly PEA values, the locations were classified as: low PEA, Alcañiz, Daroca and Tamarite; b) moderate PEA, Montañana, Monte Julia and Sariñena; c) moderately high PEA, Santa Anastasia; and d) high PEA, Bujaraloz, Gallocanta and Monflorite. For estimating TD, the sprinkler irrigation was simulated for two frames (T18x18 and T21x18), two crops (corn and alfalfa) and three irrigation strategies: a) standard, CUC ≥ 84 % and PEA ≤ 20%; b) demanding, CUC ≥ 90 % and PEA ≤ 15%; and c) relaxed, CUC ≥ 80 % and PEA ≤ 25%. The computed TD values were quite small in windy or high windy locations even for the relaxed irrigation strategy (average values of TD between 31 and 41 % for corn and between 51 and 63 % for alfalfa). From this analysis, it can be concluded that the demanding strategy is unfeasible at any location due to the small improvement of irrigation quality while the cost in terms of TD is quite high even in non-windy locations. A new strategy less restrictive (CUC ≥ 70 % and PEA ≤ 25 %) was also analyzed resulting in acceptable mean CUC values (CUC ≥ 84 %) in all locations, in the case of alfalfa, and all locations but Monflorite (CUC = 82%, both sprinkler frames) and Bujaraloz (CUC = 83 %, frame T18X18), in the case of corn. With this strategy, the TD values were more operative in all locations, mainly in those windy and high-windy (minimum TD of 54 % for corn for the frame T21x18 in Gallocanta and Santa Anastasia).
