Javier Aramayona is a permanent CSIC researcher working at ICMAT, and is currently the Director of the Fundamental Mathematics Department at ICMAT. Javier obtained his PhD at the University of Southampton in 2005, under the supervision of Brian Bowditch. He then held postdoctoral positions at Warwick, Marseille, MSRI and Urbana-Champaign. Between 2008 and 2013 he was (permanent) Lecturer in Mathematics at the National University of Ireland, Galway; and between 2013-2015 he was Maître de Conférences at the Université de Toulouse III (Paul Sabatier). In 2015 he returned to Madrid with a Ramón y Cajal fellowship, and in 2020 he joined CSIC as a permanent researcher (Científico Titular). Javier’s interests lie at the intersection between geometry, topology and group theory. Most of his papers revolve around mapping class groups of topological surfaces and the spaces on which these act. Javier strongly believes in helping mathematics research become a fully inclusive community, free from from all sorts of bias. To this end, he participates in ICMAT’s Gender Commission and Mathematics Culture Unit.
