I have a broad background in biochemistry, cellular-molecular biology, and immunology with specific training and skill to make connections across disciplines and to combine basic protein chemistry with biological signaling and protein interactions to study the functional relationship between the CD38 receptor, the TCR and protein kinases in the cellular behavior of T and B lymphocytes. I have long term research interests in the study of the molecular basis of alterations in the signaling of T and B lymphocytes in patients with autoimmune diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE, and psoriasis. In addition I studied CD38-deficient mice (Cd38KO) for phenotypic, functional and proteomic studies in animal models of autoimmune diseases (arthritis reumatoide and pristane induced-lupus). Several of these studies were carried out to search for potential biomarkers of the disease using proteomics approaches (2D-DiGE, MS-MALDI-TOF/TOF and LC MS/MS) and gene expression studies. Results of these researches have been presented in a number of national and international scientific meetings, and published in peer-reviewed publications of biochemistry, immunology, proteomic and dermatology journals. These results were the basis for doctoral thesis. In addition, as PI or co-Investigator on several funded grants I positively managed some projects and I collaborated with basic scientists [Dr. Jaime Sancho, IPBLN-CSIC; Dr. A. Corbí, CIB-CSIC; Dr. J. Abian CSIC-UAB; Dr. R. Merino, CSIC-UC; Dr. JA Barcenas, UCO; Dr. F. Malavasi and Dr. A. Funaro, Torino University; Dr. F. Lund, Alabama University; Dr. C. Terhorst, Harvard University] and clinical scientists [from University Hospitals, Granada, Dr. N. Ortego-Centeno and Dr. J. Salmeron].
