My main scientific interest is on the study of the ecosystem functioning and how the ecosystems respond to global change. A large fraction of my research activity has been focused on quantifying rates of biogeochemical processes which transform C, N and P in aquatic ecosystems. My work is mainly focused on the study of aquatic ecosystems under heavy stress (lack of water, nutrient excess, livestock pressure, etc.). In particular, my main scientific objectives are (1) to determine how the interactions between abiotic and biotic compartments drive ecosytem functioning, (2) to assess how structure and function interact under stressful situations in an ecosystem, and (3) to measure ecosystem services to be quantified as an economic value to society. In this sense, through multidisciplinary research, my colleagues and I have shown that a) semi-arid wetlands act very differently from temperate showing different patterns on biogeochemical processes depending on environmental conditions (strong dependence on both hydrology and macrophytes; 23 papers), b) variables controling global nutrient exportation from watersheds are not uniform throughout the Earth (3 papers), c) the effects of environmental degradation in the ecosystem structure are detected even in the short term (14 articles, 2 opinion papers) and d) conservation of ecosystems strongly depends on pollution control (12 papers). I've been IP in 5 research projects (2 in Spain and 3 abroad) and have participated in 10 (7 national and 3 international). Since 2008, my group is focusing on the experimental study of the effects of global change on aquatic ecosystems through experiments of increasing complexity but high scientific value. Examples of this are my last two projects as IP, one that represents the first Free-air CO2 enrichment facility (FACE) in a wetland, and another that studied using 13C and 15N stable isotopes enrichments C and N cycling in lakes. I am the author of 3 books, one of them being the first international monograph Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park (Springer, 2010). I have supervised 7 Master thesis, 11 Graduate thesis, and currently 2 Doctoral dissertations which will be defended shortly. I've been predoctoral fellow of the Center for Environmental Sciences-CSIC (1997-2000), postdoc at the Autonomous University of Madrid (2001) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2002-03) and Research Professor of the Sonora Technological Institute (ITSON, Mexico, 2003-07). During my postdoc stay I collaborated with researchers at the ITSON, CIBNOR, University of Sonora, and the Institute of Limnology and Marine Sciences, all Mexicans, and the University of Arizona, the University of California and the New Mexico Technological Institute, focusing in eco-hydrological processes in water-limited ecosystems. In 2007 I obtained a senior scientist position at the Spanish Research Council, firstly at the Institute of Natural Resources and from 2010 at the National Museum of Natural Sciences.
