I am a microbial ecologist with a focus on lithic microbial ecosystems from extreme environments and these inducing biodeterioration of monuments. My main research themes are: -Characterization of the genetic and functional microbial diversity in soil and lithic substrates from deglaciated areas in polar regions. -Diversity, ecology and geomicrobiology in a wide range of lithic microbial ecosystems from extreme environments. -Phylogeography, ultrastructure and geomicrobiology of Antarctic and littoral lichens. -Analysis of bioderioration processes generated by the microbial and lichen colonization of monumental rock. At the present, we are involved in the Project of spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, titled "Lithic microbial ecosystems of polar glacier forelands. Ecological sucession, phylodiversity and geomicrobiology"- CTM2012-38222-C02-02, from which I am main investigator. In this Project, we are analyzing the genetic and functional microbial diversity in glacier forelands from antarctic, subantarctic and subarctic areas in order to characterize primary sucession processes after glaciar retreat in different polar regions. We also participate in CAM project titled "Technologies and conservation of Geomatherials from Cultural Heritage"-GEOMATERIALES 2-CM, which it is focused in the study of biodeterioration processes in different materials and the development of technologies for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these processes.
