I am interested in plankton dynamics and physical-biological interactions in marine systems, particularly noxious and toxic phytoplankton species, their abundance and activity, and the ecosystem effects of their proliferations. This involves the study of these species and the factors that regulate their abundance. My research also examines the factors that regulate the community structure (functional and taxonomic) of microorganisms, and how physical and chemical changes in the marine environment influence the planktonic community. The focus of my studies has been the coastal environment and nearshore HABs in the Mediterranean Sea, including investigations into the life cycles and strategies of these species, empirical measures of their growth and loss rates, and their cell cycle dynamics, and the compilation of databases regarding organism abundance. The techniques used for this purpose include working with cultured microalgae clones and natural populations, microscopy (optical, scanning, transmission), image analysis, flow cytometry and fluorescent probes. Mis mayores intereses están en el campo de la biología marina particularmente en el campo de la dinámica del fitoplancton y sus interacciones físico-biológicas. Me interesan las especies de fitoplancton tóxico y nocivo, su abundancia y actividad y los efectos de sus proliferaciones en el ecosistema costero. Esto implica el estudio de las especies y los factores abióticos que regulan su abundancia. Me interesan aquellos factores que regulan la estructura de la comunidad de microorganismos (estructura taxonómica y funcional) y como los cambios físicos y químicos del ambiente marino afectan a la comunidad planctónica. Estoy centrada en estudios en la zona costera y las proliferaciones algales nocivas en el mar Mediterráneo. El estudio de la zona costera me ha llevado a interesarme por la situación actual y el futuro de los ecosistemas costeros y preguntarme como responderán a la variabilidad del clima y las perturbaciones humanas.
