My research is broadly focused on Soil Science and Environmental Geochemistry. My goal is to understand the main physical and chemical processes involved in soil pollution processes most importantly related to metals and metalloids. I study the chemistry, reactions and transport phenomena of potentially toxic contaminants and species in soils and sediments. In addition to classical methods based on chemical extractions to determine the bioavailability and mobility of contaminants, we use spectroscopy and microscopy, particularly synchrotron X-ray methods, to determine element speciation and molecular-scale mechanisms of biogeochemical reactions in natural systems. We have also studied the potential application of inorganic amendments (including industrial by-products) for in situ remediation procedures of metal polluted soils.
