Microbiología ambiental y particularmente los ambientes subterráneos, con especial atención a la biodiversidad y ecología microbiana en cuevas, minas, túneles, catacumbas y tumbas. Dentro de estos estudios destaca la taxonomía de bacterias y hongos, la descripción de nuevos géneros y especies de microorganismos y su participación en el ciclo biogeoquímico de los elementos. Asimismo, se estudian los conjuntos arqueológicos, monumentos y los materiales del Patrimonio Cultural, utilizando técnicas de análisis modernas, no destructivas y semidestructivas, se diagnostican sus amenazas y se proponen recomendaciones para su conservación.
