La investigación está dirigida al estudio de patógenos de suelo que causan enfermedades en cultivos extensivos, principalmente girasol y maíz. La línea de mayor solidez y trayectoria la constituye el estudio de las enfermedades de girasol. Siempre asociadas a patógenos de suelo, se consideran tanto las enfermedades más importantes en España: jopo (Orobanche cumana) y mildiu (Plasmopara halstedii), como otras de gran relevancia a nivel internacional: verticilosis (Verticillium dahliae) y marchitez y podredumbre del tallo (Sclerotinia spp.). En el caso del maíz la investigación se centra en la marchitez tardía causada por el hongo de suelo Cephalosporium maydis. También se colabora con otros investigadores en aspectos relacionados con el control del complejo de enfermedades del espárrago causadas por Fusarium spp. Aproximaciones específicas de la investigación que se lleva a cabo en el laboratorio son: Caracterización patogénica y molecular de las poblaciones de patógenos. Estudios de estrategias de control de enfermedades de cultivos: control genético, químico, cultural y mediante sustancias bioactivas. Detección temprana de la infección de cultivos por patógenos de suelo. Evaluación y análisis de la expresión de la resistencia genética en campo y su efecto sobre el rendimiento en el caso de híbridos y líneas de mejora de girasol experimentales y cultivadas.
