Mi investigación se centra en el estudio y conservación de la biodiversidad marina de los fondos rocosos litorales. Mi objetivo es entender los patrones de distribución de especies a escalas locales y globales, incluyendo especies amenazadas, invasoras, o de interés pesquero, los efectos de las áreas marinas protegidas en la biodiversidad marina, la resistencia y resiliencia de las comunidades bentónicas frente a las amenazas del cambio climático y global, y el papel del ser humano en la organización y funcionamiento de las fondos rocosos litorales mediante el estudio de los sistemas socio-ecológicos marinos. Para ello, mi aproximación metodológica pasa por la generación de grandes volúmenes de datos biológicos, ambientales y sociales, por lo que la monitorización de dichas variables a grandes escalas espacio temporales es la base sobre la que se sustenta mi investigación. Para ayudar en esta tarea, he introducido en España y Europa el programa internacional de ciencia ciudadana Reef Life Survey, del que soy el investigador principal. RLS une científicos, gestores y amantes del mar para conseguir datos de alto valor científico que permita entender y salvaguardar la biodiversidad de los fondos marinos rocosos. La transferencia del conocimiento científico a los gestores de recursos marinos es un aspecto imprescindible para maximizar nuestra eficacia en conservación.
