Mi principal interés en investigación se centra en el papel directo y indirecto que juegan las interacciones bióticas (herbivorismo y depredación) en ecosistemas bentónicos dominados por productores primarios (macroalgas, praderas y corales). Muchos de éstos ecosistemas son altamente susceptibles al control por depredación/herbívoros que a menudo causa estados alternativos. Más recientemente también hemos incluido el papel que tiene el paisaje marino y el comportamiento de los herbívoros y depredadores en este control. Un especial interés está en el rol que los megaherbívoros (dugongos y tortugas) desarrollan en estos sistemas. Estos estudios están enmarcado en un conjunto más general donde intentamos entender y predecir la resiliencia (resistencia y recuperación) de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos frente al cambio global (aumento de temperatura, sobrepesca, llegada especies invasivas y eutrofización); en éste aspecto también incluimos los posibles mecanismos de retroalimentación si existen. Ésta parte se desarrolla en parte gracias al mantenimiento de series temporales que llevamos realizando desde las últimas dos décadas complementadas con un trabajo de campo donde analizamos gradientes, los experimentos manipulativos en el campo y el laboratorio y la modelización de algunos de estos procesos que nos pueden ayudar en las predicciones. Finalmente y fruto de los proyectos que estoy desarrollando en la India un último interés está cada vez más presente en nuestra investigación relacionado con el acoplamiento de los sistemas socioecológicos. En particular centrado en los distintos roles de las instituciones en el control de los recursos pesqueros. Todas las líneas de investigación se desarrollan principalmente en dos áreas geográficas: el Mediterráneo y las islas Lacadivas y Andamanes (Océano Índico) y en tres ecosistemas: ecosistemas dominados por macroalgas, praderas marinas y arrecifes de corales.
