Descripción/Description
OBSTRADE is designed to understand the emergence of the first Neolithic exchange networks: obsidian trade at the onset of the farming in the Near East. The transition from nomadic hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers is one of the most important turning points in human history. Species of plants and animals were intensively exploited and then domesticated while mobile hunter-gatherers evolved into sedentary farming communities in the Fertile Crescent, from 12,000 to 6,500 cal BC. At the same time, the increase in long-distance exchange, shown by the obsidian trade, reflects the establishment of a new complex social networks, characterised by distant villages interactions across the region. By understanding what obsidian tools were used for and how they were exchanged, the EU-funded ObsTrade will investigate the role played by this network in the adoption and spread of innovations, the impact of obsidian trade in the consolidation of this network, and how it contributed to the successful spread of the Neolithic way-of-life in the region.
