[ES] Como historiadores del Mediterráneo medieval, son constantes los interrogantes sin respuesta clara a los que tenemos que hacer frente. Y también son múltiples las problemáticas asociadas a la definición, vacilación y fijación tanto de términos y conceptos como de herramientas analíticas que condicionan nuestra investigación.
Este proyecto de investigación reflexionará específicamente sobre ello; y, en la medida de lo posible, contribuirá a responder algunos de estos interrogantes a través de dos objetivos principales.
El primero de ellos es estudiar con mayor detalle, a través de sus características individuales, las personas que componen algunos de los colectivos que se mueven o desplazan (navegan), de forma voluntaria o forzada, por el Mediterráneo medieval (hombres y mujeres esclavizados, tripulaciones, actores secundarios), con el objetivo de detectar la emergencia de patrones que, hasta la fecha, habían pasado desapercibidos y, por lo tanto, no habíamos podido analizar debidamente.
El segundo gran objetivo es analizar sistemáticamente, primero, y reflexionar críticamente, después, sobre un conjunto de etiquetas y descriptores que la documentación aplica a las personas y colectivos que se mueven o desplazan (navegan) por el Mediterráneo medieval, y que habitualmente los especialistas empleamos fundamentándonos, sobre todo, en nuestras impresiones deductivas (y, por lo tanto, subjetivas). Analizaremos algunas de las etiquetas más relevantes (y, a su vez, resbaladizas y ambiguas) que se relacionan con nuestras investigaciones en torno a la movilidad en el Mediterráneo medieval (esclavo vs. cautivo, pirata vs. corsario), para comprobar si nuestras hipótesis de trabajo conceptual se confirman o no a través de un estudio más detallado de la terminología empleada por las fuentes, o si debemos ponerlas en cuestión. Y crearemos un vocabulario ilustrado de términos náuticos de uso habitual en las fuentes.
El objetivo global es, pues, enriquecer nuestros conocimientos para contribuir a generar de forma fundamentada el necesario consenso académico, mediante un análisis pormenorizado ya no de un Mediterráneo de las gentes o colectivos, sino de un Mediterráneo de las personas.
[EN] As historians of the Medieval Mediterranean, there are constant questions without a clear answer to which we have to face. And there are also multiple problems associated to the definition, fluctuation and fixation of terms and concepts as well as to the use of relevant analytical tools that determine and condition our research.
This research project will reflect specifically on this problematic; and, to the extent possible, it will contribute to answer some of these questions through two main objectives.
The first of them is to study in greater detail, through their individual characteristics, the people that composed some of the groups that move or travel (navigate), voluntarily or forced, through the Medieval Mediterranean Sea (enslaved men and women, crews, secondary actors), in order to detect the emergence of patterns that, until today, have gone unnoticed and, therefore, have not been properly analysed.
The second major objective is to systematically analyse, first, and then critically reflect on a set of labels and descriptors that the documentation applies to people and groups that move or displace (navigate) throughout the Medieval Mediterranean Sea. Usually, researchers on medieval Mediterranean history use this labels and descriptors based, above all, on their deductive (and, therefore, subjective) impressions, as we also do. Now, we will analyse some of the most relevant (and, at the same time, some of the most fluctuating and ambiguous) labels that are related to our research on mobility in the medieval Mediterranean (e.g. slave vs. captive, pirate vs. corsair) to verify whether our hypotheses of conceptual work are confirmed or not through a more detailed study of the terminology used by the sources, or if we must reconsider them. We will also create an illustrated vocabulary of nautical terms that commonly appear in the documentation.
The global aim of this project is, then, to improve our knowledge in order to contribute to generate in a well-founded way the necessary academic consensus in these topics. We will do so through a detailed analysis not of a Mediterranean of people and groups, but of a Mediterranean of human beings.
