The region studied is from 42ºN to 44ºN and from 7.7ºW to 10ºW. Thirty-nine stations were sampled along eight transects perpendicular to the coastline. Hydrographic sampling was performed with an SBE 9 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) probe incorporated into a rosette sampler with 1.7 L PVC Niskin bottles. Subsamples of salinity, nutrients and chlorophyIl a were taken with 1.7 L polyvinyl chloride Niskin bottles, placed around the rosette, at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150,200,250,300, 350 and 400 m depth. Salinity was calculated from conductivity measurements with an AUTOSAL 8400A using Eq. (6) of UNESCO (1981) with an estimated analytical error of 0.003. Nutrient concentrations were determined by segmented flow analysis with Technicon AAII systems, following Hansen and Grasshof (1983) with some improvements (Mourino and Fraga, 1985; Alvarez-Salgado et al., 1992). The analytical errors were 0.02 micromol/kg for nitrite, 0.05 micromol/kg for nitrate, ammonium and silicate and 0.01 micromol/kg for phosphate. Dissolved oxygen was determined by Winkler potentiometric titration. The estimated analytical error was 1 micromol/kg. pH (NBS) was measured potentiometrically with an error of 0.010 and normalised to 15 DEGC (Perez and Fraga, 1987a). Alkalinity was determined by potentiometric titration with HCl to a final pH of 4.45 (Perez and Fraga, 1987b). The analytical error was 2 micromol/kg. Chlorophyll was measured after 90% acetone extraction in a 10,000 R Turner fluorometer (Yentsch and Menzel, 1963). The precision was 0.05 microgr/L. Data available at https://digital.csic.es/
