Abstract:Sisteen varieties of maize (Zea Mays L.) comprising four germplasm group (Corn Belt populations, Galician populations, Aragonese populations and commercial hybrids) were grown at two locations in Spain for two years in order to study the variability for resistance to second brood attacks of European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.). Five traits were measured; number of tunnels, tunnel length, grain moisture at harvest and yield of grain. Significant differences among varieties were found for all traits except for tunnel length. The smallest number of tunnels was exhibited by three local Spanish population (Gallego, Amarillo temprano de Aragón y Rojo temprano de Aragón). Lodging depended on nomber of tunnels (b = -0.999*) and tunnel length (b 0.085*) and yield depended only on the amount of lodging ( b = -0-065**) as shown by a multiple regression analysis. The Spanish populations seem to be promising sources of resistance to European corn borer. However, their yield is at present too low, so they must be improved in this sense.
