Permanencia y transmisión del acervo botánico etnomedicinal en la Isla de Ometepe (Nicaragua)

Abstract

[EN] In this study, we document the use of medicinal plants among the indigenous population of Tilgüe on the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. Field investigations included structured interviews and field trips. This research is important because it is the first systematic ethnobotanical study in Ometepe Island, a region undergoing tremendous changes where the people are highly acculturated, but with very little documentation of their ethnobotanical heritage. Based on the results of this study we believe that for the near future, the Tilgüe community –mainly women– will continue to rely on medicinal plants as a primary source of health care.

[ES] En este estudio se documenta la utilización de plantas medicinales entre la población indígena de Tilgüe en la Isla de Ometepe en Nicaragua. El trabajo de campo incluye entrevistas estructuradas y visitas sobre el terreno. Esta investigación es importante porque es el primer estudio etnobotánico sistemático en la isla de Ometepe, una región que está experimentando grandes cambios sociales sobre una población muy aculturada, pero con muy poca documentación sobre su patrimonio etnobotánico. De acuerdo con los resultados de este estudio, se postula que, en un futuro próximo, la comunidad de Tilgüe –principalmente las mujeres– seguirá dependiendo de las plantas medicinales como fuente primaria de la salud.
