AbstractIn the question twenty to the book of Judges Theodoret of Cyrus ask "Why did the Lord permit the sacrifice of Jephthah's daughter?" This is indeed a real difficulty of the Holy Writ which appears also in the rabbinic commentaries, taking into account that in other parts of Scripture God condemns human sacrifices and that in Genesis 22 God prevented the sacrifice of Abraham's son. God's silence in Jephthah's daughter sacrifice is still a stumbling-block for interpreters.
