Abstract: Nine winemaking grape cultivars from NW Spain (8 Caino types and Tinta Femia) were characterised using ampelometric methods (construction of typical "mean leaves") and determination of their genetic profiles with respect to 6 microsatellite markers. Similarities between cultivars were determined. 33 alleles were detected at the 6 microsatellite loci analysed. All cultivars were successfully identified using both methods, but a combintion of data from both methods gave more complete identification of cultivars. Synonymy among these cultivars, and with other Spanish and Portuguese winemaking grape cultivars, is discussed.
