Resumen:The potent excitatory amino acid glutamate mediates its excitatory effects through a wide variety of specific ionotropic receptors, including NMDA, AMPA and kainate receptors. During the past decade, a whole family of subunits for kainate receptor has been identified, isolated and cloned. Although this receptor has been rather elusive to experimentation, its function is becoming established in some sytems. Recent results support the idea that of kainate receptors participate in synaptic transmission and that their activation downregulates GABAergic inhibition by modulating the reliability of GABA synapses. It has also been established taht in addition to their ionotropic activity, kainate receptor activation may trigger a second messenger cascade that results in the inhibition of GABA release. Thus, kainate receptors have a dual signaling mechanism. Given their strategic locatio, kainate receptors may play an important role in the etiology of epilepsy and could represent a future target for antiepileptics drigs.
