ResumenThe Channel IA of the Magdalena fan develops on the continental slope and rise of the tectonically active Colombian margin (Caribbean Sea). It is the most recent channel in the eastern of that fan, although it is not presently active. The sinuosity of this channel is highly variable ranging from 1.0 to 2.4 with a mean base level of 1.3 indicating that the channel is mainly sinuous. We observe marked local peaks of variable sinuosity. Some of these peaks obey to “natural” development of the channel and others seem to be related to the presence of faults. These sinuosity peaks result from the channel ability to reduce the steepness of fault escarpments. The local peaks of sinuosity display morphological features associated to them, as internal levees and crevasse splay channels. These morphological features appear with different degrees of development that range from an initial stage with incipient internal levees and no evidences of crevasse splay channels, to a mature stage with well developed internal levees and related crevasse splay channels, to a final stage that would result in the meander strangulation and channel avulsion.
