El léxico médico del pasado: los nombres de las enfermedades

Abstract

La recuperación de los significados del léxico médico y científico del pasado conlleva siempre un ejercicio de «traducción cultural», tanto más complejo cuanto más lejano se encuentra el pasado a restituir. Se muestran aquí algunas complejidades inherentes a la reconstrucción del significado de los términos médicos referentes a las enfermedades humanas del pasado, en razón de las dificultades conceptuales y metodológicas que plantea la identificación retrospectiva de éstas. Para ello se recurre a dos ejemplos históricos: el uso de la etiqueta «tifus» en las historias de las enfermedades escritas con anterioridad a la teoría bacteriológica o al margen de ella; y el «sudor inglés», una misteriosa afección epidémica que golpeó repetidamente la zona del canal de la Mancha entre finales del siglo XV y mediados del XVI. El primer caso revela la doble «traducción cultural» que habitualmente conlleva la práctica del diagnóstico retrospectivo de las enfermedades del pasado, cuando se manejan este género de historias. El segundo, en cambio, pone de manifiesto las serias limitaciones implícitas en dicha práctica, ilustrando de forma desnuda la gran variabilidad de etiquetas diagnósticas que los historiadores suelen asignar a las enfermedades del pasado y la llamativa proximidad de estas etiquetas a las preocupaciones nosológicas propias de la medicina del tiempo de aquéllos.

Recovering meaning from the medical and scientific lexicon of the past is always an exercise in “cultural translation,” and the older the text is, the more complex this task becomes. Examples are given here of some of the complexities inherent in reconstructing the meaning of medical terms that refer to human diseases of the past, with reference to the conceptual and methodological difficulties surrounding the retrospective identification of these diseases. Two historical examples are used to illustrate these difficulties: use of the label “typhus” in accounts of diseases written before, or in ignorance of, germ theory, and sudor Anglicus, a mysterious epidemic that struck areas bordering on the English Channel repeatedly from the end of the 15th to the mid-16th century. The former example reveals the dual aspects of “cultural translation” generally involved in retrospective diagnoses of disease of the past when this type of account is analyzed. The latter, on the other hand, illustrates the severe limitations implicit in this approach, and starkly illustrates the enormous variability in diagnostic labels that historians often assign to diseases of the past, as well as the marked affinity between these labels and the nosological concerns that typified medical practice at the time when these historians were active.
