El azote de las Compañías y sus estragos en Navarra

Abstract

[ES] A principios de 1366 estallaba en Castilla la guerra civil que conduciría finalmente al trono a Enrique II de Trastámara. Pese a los sucesivos intentos de atracción por ambos contendientes, Carlos II de Navarra consiguió mantenerse al margen del conflicto; un conflicto de complejos intereses que, sin embargo, iba a salpicar indirectamente al pequeño reino pirenaico.

De ello se encargaron las tropas mercenarias que, contratadas al otro lado del Pirineo, intervinieron en la contienda, primero al lado del pretendiente y después en el bando anglo-petrista. A través de los ricos fondos del Archivo General de Navarra se 'ha tratado de reconstruir los estragos provocados en suelo navarro por estas terribles Compañías que -se insiste una y otra vez en la documentación- «gastaban y destruían todo por donde pasaban». Muy pocas zonas del reino se vieron libres de tan maléfica plaga. Sobre los atropellos perpetrados, y también sobre la consiguiente política de gracias y privilegios reales, se hallará exhaustiva información en las páginas del presente trabajo.

[EN] At the beginning of 1366 the civil war that finally led Enrique 11 o: Trastámara to the throne broke out in Castile. In spite of the repeated attempts of attraction from both sides, Carlos 11 of Navarre managed to keep out from the conflict. It was a conflict of complex interests which, however, would indirectly affect the small Pyrenean kingdom, because of the mercenary troops engaged beyond the Pyrenees, that took part in the struggle fighting in the side of the pretender at the beginning and with Pedro the First later on. Thanks to the important records of the Archivo Geneval de Navarra, 1 have tried to reconstruct the ravages made in Navarre by the these fearsome Companies that -it is remarked a lot of times al1 along the documentation- used up and destroyed everywhere they passed.
