Abstract

Royo Cómez was one of the many Spanish scientists fortunate enough to benefit from the impulse which }AE gave to the Spanish Science sin ce its creation in 190 7. One of the }A E' s priorities was to provide financia/ support to send Spanish researches abroad to familiarize themselves with new techniques and ideas. Royo avai/ed of three or perhaps four scholarships in E urape: the first in 1924-1925 (of four months) in France, Switzerland Belgium and Cermany; the second in 1927 (of two months) in France and England; the third in 1935 to visit Paris and London 's museums and to attend a fieldtrip celebrating the Centenary of the British Ceological Survey Foundation on the Southern coast of England and the lsfe of Wight; and final/y a possible fourth scholarchip in 193 7 to attend the lnternational geological Congress in URSS. Royo drew for these experiences when completing his studies fundamental/y on Wea/d and its faunas, specially mol/uses and dinosaurs although he also continued to study the Neogene and to examine in more detail the museological aspects of the centers visited. This resu/ted in exchange of specimens, study by European specia/ists of the Spanish material of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, and gifts of fossil collections which may be presently found in the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales.
