Morphology of the larval stages of Damithrax tortugae (Brachyura: Mithracidae) and its current taxonomical status

AbstractThe current taxonomical status of the spider crabs Damithrax tortugae and D. hispidus is a matter of debate. Recent data point out to the validity of both names as to the recently proposed genus Damithrax. Intending to bring new information on the knowledge of these species we conducted a study on post-embryonic stages of D. tortugae and compared their morphology with described zoea of other Mithracidae species, including D. hispidus. The ovigerous female of D. tortugae was collected in Ilha das Palmas, Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil and kept in laboratory until hatching. Larvae were fixed with 80% ethanol and 4% formaldehyde. The larval development of Damithrax consists in two zoeas and one megalopa stage. For larval description and measurements 10 larvae of Zoea I, two Zoea II and one Megalopa we used. The main morphological differences observed among analyzed species for the Zoea I were in the ventral margin of carapace, and setation pattern of coxal endite and endopod of maxillule, coxal endite of maxilla and number of setae in the endopod of second maxilliped. For the Zoea II the differences were also in the number and arrangement of setae in the basial endite and endopod of maxillule, basial and coxal endite of maxilla and endopod of second maxilliped. Therefore, larval morphology corroborates the taxonomic validity of D. tortugae and D. hispidus.
