El Archivo Fotográfico de Arte del CSIC tras 1939. Herencia, continuidad y uso en el estudio y protección del patrimonio artístico español

Abstract

[EN] Since the creation in 1910 of the Centro de Estudios Históricos by the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios, and at the initiative of both Art and Archeology sections, a photographic archive of art was implemented. It was a new instru-ment to study Spanish artistic heritage by means of photography, which first functioned as a "cabinet" and then as a professional "laboratory". From 1931 onwards, during the Spanish Second Republic and through the Dirección General de Bellas Artes, the instrument was renamed Fichero de Arte Antiguo and acquired another role: the contribution to cataloguing and documenting it, in order to counter the continuous damage and plunder. The subsequent Spanish Civil War disrupted its operativeness, although professionals and procedures were mainly maintained. At the end of the war, in 1939, the Conse-jo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas was founded and the Fichero de Ar-te Antiguo was integrated into its Instituto Diego Velázquez.

The present paper briefly explores the continuity of this archive, especially during the Francoism and in relation to its purposes, uses and achievements regarding the study of art and protection of artistic heritage; an itinerary imbri-cated with the evolution of conceptions and historical-artistic knowledge, as well as administrative actions on that heritage and its strategies for analysis and protection.

[ES] Desde la creación en 1910 del Centro de Estudios Históricos de la Junta para Ampliación de Estudios se implementó en su seno, por iniciativa de sus secciones de Arte y Arqueología, un archivo fotográfico sobre arte. Era un nuevo instrumento de estudio y conocimiento del patrimonio artístico apoyado en la fotografía y sus nuevos usos profesionales, que primero funcionó como “gabinete” y luego como “laboratorio” profesional. Con la llegada de la II República en 1931 y a iniciativa de la Dirección General de Bellas Artes, el instrumento pasó a denominarse Fichero de Arte Antiguo, añadiéndole una nueva función: contribuir a catalogarlo y documentarlo para combatir los continuos daños y expolios que venía sufriendo. La subsiguiente guerra civil alteró su funcionamiento, aunque utilizó a sus profesionales y se inspiró en sus procedimientos. Acabada ésta y fundado en 1939 el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, el Fichero de Arte Antiguo se integró en su Instituto Diego Velázquez manteniendo y acomodando sus funciones.

El presente trabajo se adentra brevemente en la continuidad y trayecto de este archivo, especialmente durante el periodo franquista y en relación a sus finalidades, usos y logros respecto al estudio del arte y protección del patrimonio artístico; trayecto imbricado con la evolución de las concepciones y conocimientos histórico-artísticos y las actuaciones administrativas sobre el patrimonio y sus fórmulas de análisis y protección.
