AbstractAt the early stages of telencephalic development we tracked the generation of several cell populations and their tangential migration along different pathways to reach their destinations in the olfactory cortex. Through tracer injections in the telencephalon of mouse embryos that were then cultured in toto, we found different areas that give rise to neurons that participate in the olfactory system. For instance, cells that originate in the lateral ganglionic eminence migrate in an open fan-like manner through the olfactory cortex, while those originating in the rostral portion of the lateral ganglionic eminence migrate tangentially into the most anterior region of the telencephalon, at the level of the prospective olfactory bulb. Some neurons from both, the entire dorsal telencephalon and the rostro-medial telencephalic wall migrate towards the olfactory cortex. Finally, some cells that originate in the germinative area of the rostral pole of the telencephalon, at the level of the septo-eminential sulcus, reach either the prospective olfactory bulb by migrating rostrally or the olfactory cortex by migrating caudally. Our data demonstrate the multiple telencephalic origins of the first olfactory neurons generated; each cell population colonized the olfactory cortex following an accurate topographic map, using different migratory routes and tangential migrations.
